Topic Sentence
This is the main idea that you want to make about the topic. It should state in one sentence what your paragraph is going to be about. E.g. While the Muslim empires of the 14th-16th centuries had significant impacts on the world, they never came to dominate as Europe will because... (remember "rule of 3")
Elaboration
Write one or two sentences explaining your topic sentence. E.g. location? time period?
Examples/Evidence
Explain specific evidence/examples for your 3 choices in your topic sentence.
Explanation/analysis
This is a crucial part of the paragraph which requires some thought. Here, you need to explain how the evidence/examples you provided support your main idea in the topic sentence. WHY did you choose these reasons over others? Give specific reasons AND how they explain the failure of the Muslim empires to achieve world dominance at that time.. E.g. Clearly the administrative methods used by some of the leaders of the Muslim Empires hurt their ability to rise to world dominance because...This should be about 4 sentences in length.
Link Sentence

There should be limits to our access of information because too much information can violate basic human right of privacy.
Elaboration
Too much information can violate right to privacy.
Examples/Evidence
For example, I believe that people should not have access to other people's personal information such as their health issues, or personal feelings toward certain issues.
Explanation/Analysis
When other people have access to your health issues, your private infromation has been intruded such as your health issues or physical information. Those private information is not the others' business to know, and they do not have the right to know your physical information, and you have the right to keep it to yourself.

How did the Ottomans treat non-Muslims?
The Ottomans raided the non-Muslim's territory. As the Ottomans settled, they made the non-Muslim pay the taxes while the Muslims didn't have to pay for the taxes but joined the army.
What were Suleyman's major accomplishments?
Suleyman's major accomplishments were expanding the Ottoman's Empire massively. He conquered some of eastern Europe, entire eastern Mediterranean Sea and some of North Africa. He ruled his empire with strong and well-developed, structured government, and also open-religion-ed. His empire let their people choose their own religion. Suleyman also visioned his empire filled with art, and built many fine artistic buildings.
Despite their brilliant rule, what critical mistake did Suleiman and Shah Abbas make?
Despite Suleiman and Shah Abbas did a great job on ruling their empires, they were careless about the future of their empires. They weren't thoughtful about who was going to take care of their empire after they die. For Suleiman, he didn't have anyone who were as accomplished as him, so his empire declined after his death, and didn't teach his children or his followers about his know-hows and his way of ruling successful, so there was no one to continue from where he left when he died, so his empire declined. Shah Abbas was selfish and greedy about power, so he killed/injured most of his sons so that they couldn't take over his power. If he was more thoughtful, he would have, at least, not hurt one one of his son who would take care of his empire after his death.
What evidence of cultural blending can you find in Akbar's rule?
Akbar's ruling had some cultural blending. He wasn't strict about the religion of his people. He gave them their freedom to choose their own religion. He was also very open-minded towards people with different religions. He didn't pick the government officials by their religion, but their ability. Just like modern days where there is almost no racism, Akbar's time of ruling was very modern minded and treated everyone fairly. And as the cultural blending happened, two different cultures created two different languages.
How did Akbar's successors contribute to the end of the Mughal Empire?
The Akbar's successors contributed to the end of the Mughal Empire as Shah Jahan contributed a lot to art by being a patron of arts. Many beautiful buildings were built, and one of the most famous building was Taj Mahal.

Key Skill 5: Analytical Reading/Thinking
With the rebirth of thinking and questioning their world in the Western European Renaissance, people began to really "think outside the box". They questioned their lives and how they were governed, they questioned the authority of leaders and the Church and they questioned how things WERE. All of this challenging also led to what is known as the SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION. FOR NEXT CLASS, read pages 189-194 and answer the following questions thoughtfully and carefully.
1. What were the CAUSES of the Scientific Revolution? Which one do you think is MOST significant AND WHY?
The causes of the Scientific Revolution was the questioning of the scholars against Aristotle, and the bible. I think the most significant scientific revolution is The Heliocentric Theory. This was the first step of the scientific revolution. This theory which inspired many other scientists and scholars.
1. Why might those in positions of authority at the time (Church and government) tend to reject new ideas?
Those in positions of authority tended to reject new ideas because those new ideas were different from what they use to say to people. They were afraid if they new ideas went against what they used to say, people might start questioning them and not follow them.
1. Do you agree with Galileo's actions during his trial? Explain.
I disagree with Galileo's actions during his trial. He shouldn't have agreed to say the confession, by agreeing to say the confession, he is admitting by himself that what he has been doing was a total useless work. If he had refused to say the confession, he would have stirred the atmosphere of Scientific Revolution into another level and would have inspired more scholars to study and go against the church leaders.
1. Make a list of the major figures of this revolution in thinking and what they did.
Nicolaus Copernicus: He came up with the heliocentric theory which was the first step to the Scientific Revolution which inspired many others.
Johannes Kepler: Finished the work that Copernicus and concluded his work and proved his ideas true.
Galileo Galilei: Proved many of Aristotle's ideas wrong. He discovered the law of the pendulum, law of acceleration, invented telescope, published newsletters called Starry Messenger.
Francis Bacon & Rene Descartes: They came up with the 'Scientific Method' so that experiments could be carried out in a proper way with reasoning and evidence.
Isaac Newton: Published the book called Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy.
Zacharias Jassen: Invented microscope.
Andreas Vesalius: Dissected human corpses and published his observations.
Robert Boyle: Came up with the Boyle's law which talks about how the volume, temperature, and pressure of gas affect each other.
Joseph Priestly: Discovered oxygen.
1. Explain the significance of these terms:
Geocentric Theory: This was the theory written in the Bible and that was known to people before the Heliocentric theory came out. Geocentric theory states that Earth is the center of the universe and that God had made Earth special.
Heliocentric Theory: Heliocentric theory was the new idea that replaced the Geocentric theory. This new idea went against the Church and cause the scientific revolution.
Scientific Revolution: This is the revolution when people started to question the church and started to develop in science. People started to question observations rather than just following to what the church was saying.
Scientific method: This was a huge step guide for the scientists. This had to be practiced for a bit before it became widely used, but this had made just a common sense impossible to be proven right. A theory was not true until it was proven to be true with evidence and proves.
How did the Renaissance contribute to the opening of the mind in Europe
The Renaissance contributed to the opening of the mind in Europe as "art" became an essential part of their life. Renaissance brought huge changes to the people of that time. Art started to become a huge part of their life (its not good to repeat things), and this had changed the daily lives of the people that lived in the Renaissance times.
As the time of Renaissance came,(I don’t know but it sounds weird) people started to recognize art and appreciate art and grew huge interest in them.
people started to recognize, appreciate, and grew huge interest in art.
One of the requirements to be a "Renaissance Men or Women" you had to be well educated in art. (Don’t change the topic)
They had to know how to create art, inspire them, (be more specific... are you talking about the renaissance women?) and for men, there were higher expectations such as writing poems, playing music, dance, sing and (fix grammer) etc (never use etc when writing these types of writing).
Which means that the Renaissance people started to care about the looks, and the artistic beauty and as people started to create art, they became more creative and started opening their minds striving for new ideas and absorbing shocks as new fresh subjects. This caused the "opening of the mind in Europe." (What?! )
It is not a good habit to use repetition. For example, you use too much huge.

1. Why does Europe gains dominance?
Europe gains dominance because the European grew rapidly and gained a lot of power in a short amount of time. The people in Europe was developing rapidly as the Renaissance times came, and many people changed they way they were thinking. This opened up a lot of people in Europe and made them think deeper and more creatively which led to more discoveries. New discoveries helped them gain more power and made them be in dominance.

1. How did the cities of Italy help create the Renaissance?
The cities of Italy helped to create the Renaissance as the writers and artists began to express themselves and experiment with different styles. This event started the explosion of creativity in art, writing and thought which lasted about 300 years.
2. What is your opinion of the Medici family?
My opinion of the Medici family is that they have been a big part of the Renaissance since the family was in control of Florence's government. Cosmo de Medici was the wealthiest European at that tie, By giving the members of ruling council loans, he influenced them. He dictated Florence for 30years until he died in 1464.
3. How did Humanism influence Renaissance ideas?
Humanism influenced Renaissance ideas by focusing on human potential and achievements. The humanists studied to under stand the ancient Greek values. The humanists encouraged the artists and architects to continue the classical traditions. This made the subjects such as history, literature, and philosophy very popular.
4. Why did church leaders and wealthy merchants support the arts?
Church leaders and wealthy merchants supported the arts by being financially helpful to the artists. They were known as being the "patrons" of the art. For example, the Church leaders spent huge amount of money for arts. For the merchants and wealthy family, they supported art by painting their portraits. Some donated arts to the city for the exhibitions.
5. What were the similarities and differences between upper-class Renaissance men and women?
The similarities between upper-class Renaissance men and women was that they both shaped their lifestyle by the book called "Courtier". They were both expected to be charming and be educated about the classics. They were both required to be well-educated about art. But they had differences, such as that the Renaissance men were expected to have more role on the art. The upper-class man had to be well-educated in art in many ways such as being a skilled rider, singer, instrument player, swordsman. But woman had less expectations. Women were expected to inspire art but not to create them, and most of the woman did not have much influence in politics.
6. After reading the "Analyzing Primary Sources" box, respond to this question: Do the qualities called for in the ideal Renaissance man and woman seem to emphasize the individual or the group? Give evidence in the documents to back up your answer!
The qualities called for in the ideal Renaissance man and woman seem to emphasize the individual because although both of them are told to inspire art, men have more influences over those arts. They create them and be more of an active artist than the women. Therefore, I think the ideal qualities written for the Renaissance has more advantages over man with art than with women. And the Courtier also mentions about "...above all things avoiding ostentation and that impudent self-praise..." which he specifically focuses on the individuals.

Eucharist: Christian ceremony when you eat bread and wine
abstain: drawing yourself back from doing something that you enjoy
penance: a self-punishment done to show their misdoings

1. Hogflesh has committed a shame and he had to carry around a faggot for a penance. The main point of the article is to show that the ways people were punished of their misdoing and how they received their penance.
2. The roles of historian defined by John Arnold is to read records, report, and tell the world about the history.I agree with John Arnold’s assumption because to be a historian, you have to read the records to understand what happened, and as a historian you have to report and tell the world about what you have discovered by reading the records. I think historians are also a psychologists. For historians to know and fill out the empty gaps that are not recorded, they have to predict what is most likely to have happened in certain conditions.
3. “Treating their sources with fidelity means that they have faith in their sources and they will believe and take as it is said on the source and use it as a guide, and not falsify or twist the facts in the source.
4.A single event can be interpreted in more than one way because everyone has a different point of view of an event. Depending on what side the historians are on, this event could be fantastic, pointless, or something else. And the side that they are on will change the way they look at all the things that happened during the event and that will totally change the way they interpret them.
5. An event that happened both to me and my mother is remembered differently. With this in my mind, I think when attaching meaning to the history, I think it is impossible for a historian to be completely objective because no matter how hard you try, historians all have their way they look at certain stuffs, and they feel differently about it. For example, when I was young, I captured a long worm and showed it to my mom. I thought the worm was cute but my mom was grossed out. Our opinions were different because we have a different way we think of the worm. Because of that factor, the way historians translate and interpret the history to attach meanings to the history is impossible to be completely not objective.
6. The problem that may arise when historians practice subjective history is that we will all have different stories and versions of the history. Subjective history may be beneficial to the study of history in a way that the audiences could get to face many different point of views of people who has a deep knowledge of history. This will make the audience see many sides of the history and help them approach to history in many point of views. It made sense for me to remember the event differently between my mom and I. My mom hated worms, but back then, I was a little kid filled with curiosity. This tells us about the history that sometimes history is remembered in different ways because of the people’s opinion on that history.
7. Every historian is “a storyteller” because historians tells the story of history to the audience. If all historians are storytellers and there are myriad versions of every story, we might not be able to trust the historians, not every words at least. But historians’ story is not a complete fraud. The stories are based on the facts and the historians’ just tell them in their opinions. So basically, their stories are truths with their opinions mixed, which is why I think we can trust the historians. ‘
8. My view of history and historians changed based on this reading a lot. Before I read this reading, I thought historians were just people who write history text books and read books about ancient history, but now I see that they are more than that. They have different roles and “many hats” they wear. They have to interpret meaning of the history and even fill out the missing informations, and sometimes correct the contradicting informations. Now historians and history seems so much more flexible than just books. I will approach history in a way where I could read the information and think about the history in many ways and try to analyze the records and find out about the cultures that I can find in the history for better understanding of the history.

Why is the understanding culture necessary in order to understand the history?
Understanding of culture is necessary in order to understand history. Cultures can vary diversely between the countries and for different parts of the world. To be able to understand history, you have to be “in their shoes”. To “be in their shoes” you require knowledge and understanding of their “daily lives” also known as their “culture”. What they eat, how they dress, what they do, or even how they react to certain situations are known as their “culture”. Which is basically their “daily lives”, which might not seem like a big deal, but these daily basis of many group of people or an individual develops to become their “cultures”. For example, if you want to understand the history of a certain war, you would learn about what the people ate, how they dressed, what they did, or even how they reacted to the war. All these factors come from their culture and helps you understand the history of their war better because it allows you to “be in their shoes”.

Church leaders and wealthy merchants supported the arts by being financially helpful to the artists. They were known as being the "patrons" of the art.

Vocabulary:
